And, Finally

For the purposes of my Government class, this will be the final installment.

So let's talk Government. Mainly, ours! What have we got? Did anything I learn in Government class change my mind about anything? Did I get some new thoughts? New ideas? What do I say about Government now?

I say our form of Government represents everything good and bad about ourselves and our world. It is good, yet bad; nice, yet evil; fair, yet unfair; narrow, yet broad; it is full of opportunity, chances, well meanings, and great ideas. At the same time, it is corrupt, exclusive, vile, and evil. It is full of people who, when they came to the positions, held ideas that were bright and idealistic; having hopes of making a difference. Then they got there and in almost every case, have completely forgotten those ideas. They become part of the problem, not the solution. They become involved in the machines, partisan bickerings, corruption, and all the negative things associated with people who serve. It never fails.

Neither does the hypocrisy. Why is it that the Capitol and the White House have not become smoke free while they hammer anti-smoking policies down our throats? Because, it does not serve them well and since they have the power, they do not feel the need to change it. We had a post office scandal in Congress a few years back. Once again, our rules did not apply to them. As they run around telling the rest of us how to live, they ignore their own words. Drive a small car they say, as they get into their large SUV's. They fly all over in private jets screaming about what we need to do to save the enviroment. They spend and spend and spend and spend while teeling us to tighten our belts. The Government is the ultimate form of hypocrisy.

Is what we have for a Government good? The idea is. The application fails in so many ways though. I would never really want to live under a different system. But, I can think of a lot of ways our current system could be improved. Term limits, campaign time limits, more parties, less partisanship, more involvement of ordinary Americans; ideas that can change the ways things are done for our country. Simple, smart ideas.

But, there is no chance things will change. There are too many people in power who like, love, thrive, on the current system. There is no need to do anything different. So we slug along in this shit filled valley of doing everything we can to screw it up. We also contribute by repeatedly putting the corruption, the crap, the idiots, back into office. We do it at the Federal, State, and Local level. We vote the incumbents back in. It's like we say, "You've screwed us, yanked our chain, stuck your foot up our ass, and for that, here's more time to do it again!" I really don't know what that says about us either. Hopefully, someday, the shit will change. Hopefully, in my lifetime.

So that concludes my views on Government.
So now, like the MediaMachine, on to much, much more important things.

Can it be this bad? Can you make a difference? I think you can, I guess I am an idealist but I just refuse to believe it is as grim as you described it...I sure enjoyed having you in class..Good luck and keep up the good work, you are a strong student...
